I was pleasantly surprised when I was waiting for a flight home out of Cancun last summer that there is now a Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville in the Cancun airport across from the Bubba Gump shrimp company. Yearning for a taste of home after two weeks of enjoying sun, surf, and mexican sand on the beached — Along with a lot of Montezuma’s revenge, I walked in and sat down at the bar for a hurricane before heading home.
I had picked up Montezuma’s revenge on the beach somewhere where I got a little overconfident and ordered the chips and salsa. Needless to say, I began paying for it later that night. When in Mexico, it’s important to scrutinize what you eat very carefully, even though a town like Cancun has a very resort-like feel — there are still places that you can get sick at very easily. I even noticed that some of the public bathrooms I visited while there had giant Cholera warning signs on them, which probably should have been a big clue what I was in for!
The Margaritaville in Cancun is pretty much what you would expect from a Jimmy Buffet type place. They place Buffet music 100% of the time there, and had videos of his live performances going on several of the TV’s in the room, for example. They had a number of Buffet specialty margaritas on the menu as well as hurricanes, and several other tropical drinks including Pina Colladas, etc.
Overall I’d say that the experience wasn’t something that would normally excite me, but because I was feeling a bit homesick and looking for a truly American franchise feeling — It was comforting to hang out at the bar there for a couple of hours before my flight. Even though it felt very “franchisey” they still had some of the local delicacies, including huge bowls of guacamole for cheap — Which is always a plus while you are on vacation in Mexico. The salsa was tasty, and so were the mexican tacos I ordered from the bar.
The Cancun airport itself is very nice and clean, probably because the Mexican government wants to give American tourists a real treat when you visit. You’ll feel safe as can be there, and in Cancun itself because of the presence of many armed policemen and even Mexican soldiers with automatic weapons. Apparently, lots of Americans have been scared off from visiting Mexico over the past couple of years because of the drug cartels and the violence occurring elsewhere in Mexico. I can honestly say that I saw none of that while visiting Cancun, and found it to be a very friendly and safe touristy type town (Like you would expect).
Overall if you are looking for a cheap vacation, and exposure to some nice new airport bars that you might not normally get to see… Check out Cancun next time you’re planning a get away, and I think you will be pleasantly surprised. The beaches are some of the best in the world, it’s relatively affordable, and yes my friends — The airport bars are clean, warm, and inviting!
